However, it has been observed that many of these programs often overlook the needs and challenges faced by people with disabilities. To bridge this gap and ensure that individuals with disabilities also benefit from evidence-based health promotion interventions, a significant breakthrough called GRAIDs (Guidelines, Recommendations, Adaptations Including Disability) framework has been developed.

Traditionally, health promotion programs were designed without considering the unique circumstances of individuals with disabilities. This exclusion meant that these programs may not be as effective for people facing physical and developmental challenges. To address this issue, a team of researchers and experts decided to develop a set of methods and criteria that would enable the adaptation of evidence-based health promotion strategies for individuals with disabilities.

How GRAIDs Works

The development of GRAIDs involves several essential steps to ensure that the adapted programs are effective and relevant:

  1. Scoping Review: The first step involves conducting a comprehensive review of published and grey literature to gather existing information on health promotion programs for people with disabilities.
  2. Expert Workgroup: A team of nationally recognized leaders in disability and health promotion come together to review and discuss the findings from the scoping review. They use this information to create draft GRAIDs.
  3. Input from the Community: To ensure that the GRAIDs are practical and applicable in real-world settings, focus groups are conducted separately with individuals with disabilities and their family members. They provide valuable input and feedback on the proposed GRAIDs.
  4. National Consensus Meeting: A meeting is held with an expert panel consisting of 21 members. They review and vote on a final set of GRAIDs to be implemented.
  5. Peer Review: The finalized GRAIDs are then subjected to an independent peer review by national leaders from key disability organizations and professional groups.

Positive Results

So far, the GRAIDs framework has been applied to adapt 11 evidence-based obesity prevention strategies out of the 24 initially proposed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This ongoing project is making significant progress in ensuring that health promotion programs become more inclusive.
